Men’s Health Matters: What Every Man Should Know About Cancer

June is Men’s Health Month – a time dedicated to raising awareness about the unique health challenges men face, and encouraging them to take proactive steps toward a longer, healthier life. At Falcon Memorial Cancer Institute, we’re using this opportunity to shed light on a topic that doesn’t get talked about enough: men and cancer.

Why Focus on Men’s Health and Cancer?

Globally, men are less likely than women to go for regular check-ups or talk openly about their health concerns. This often leads to late-stage diagnoses, especially when it comes to certain types of cancer that primarily or disproportionately affect men.

Early detection can save lives – and it starts with awareness.

Common Cancers Affecting Men

Here are some of the most common cancers men should be aware of:

1. Prostate Cancer

One of the most prevalent cancers in men, especially over 50. Symptoms can be subtle, such as changes in urination or pelvic discomfort. Early screening through a PSA test can detect it before symptoms appear.

2. Colorectal Cancer

Affecting the colon or rectum, this cancer is often diagnosed too late due to lack of screening. Watch for changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, and unexplained weight loss.

3. Lung Cancer

More common among male smokers, but non-smokers can also be affected. Persistent cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath should never be ignored.

4. Testicular Cancer

Most common in younger men (ages 15–35), this cancer has a high survival rate when caught early. Regular self-exams are key.

Why Early Detection is Key

Cancers caught in their early stages are often more treatable and come with significantly better outcomes. Unfortunately, many men ignore early warning signs or avoid doctor visits altogether – a habit that can cost them their lives.

That’s why at Falcon Memorial Cancer Institute, we emphasize screening, awareness, and education as vital tools in the fight against cancer.
